Essential Travel Info
The official language is Japanese. English is spoken in major tourist areas, but not everywhere. Learning a few simple phrases will make your trip easier and locals really appreciate the effort:
Hello = こんにちは (Konnichiwa)
Thank you = ありがとう (Arigatou)
Excuse me / Sorry = すみません (Sumimasen)
Tip: Download a translation app or keep Google Translate handy for menus and signs.
Japan’s currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY).
ATMs that accept international cards can be found at 7-Eleven, Lawson, and post offices.
Japan is still quite cash-friendly, so always carry some coins and bills.
Contactless cards (Suica, Pasmo, IC cards) are super convenient for trains, buses, and even vending machines.
Japanese culture values respect and politeness. A few tips:
Shoes off 👞 – Always remove shoes when entering homes, temples, and certain restaurants.
Quiet on public transport 🚃 – Phone calls are discouraged; keep your voice low.
Queuing culture 🧍 – Lines are everywhere: for trains, food, even escalators. Respect them!
Cash handling 💴 – Place money in the tray at shops and restaurants, instead of handing it directly.
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is perfect if you’re traveling long distances.
For city travel, IC cards (Suica, Pasmo) are the easiest way to pay for trains, metro, and buses.
Trains are punctual and extremely reliable—just remember to stand on the correct side of the escalator (left in Tokyo, right in Osaka 😉).
Japan is a country of both ancient traditions and futuristic innovation, where you can spend one morning in a centuries-old temple and the afternoon in a neon-lit district. If you’re into culture, food, nature and adventure, our guides will help you make the most of your trip!
